Attached here is a comic strip entitled "Rumors, lies and innuendo spread far, wide and fast on the Internet" taken from "Introduction to Mass Communication: Media Literacy and Culture" by Stanley Baran, pg 324.
As we previously discuss about comparison between a blogger and a journalism, comic strip by Stanley Baran above is one factual story that proves anyone can write an article on a blog and someone may mistaken it believing it as actual source.
ReplyDelete(Wikipedia should not be rely as a main source too as it is an open source web! = .org)
But this does not mean that we should reject source from internet totally. At times internet played a role as relevant information that we would not had retrieved it somewhere else.
We all learned about media imperialism theory in this week's class and as I had also highlighted about that theory in our first discussion. Through Hollywood movies, American movie makers twisted their national history to make it in such way that they would like it to be. People who had not encountered with actual history may suffers understanding the whole situation and take it as historical incidents.
Fortunately, there is an article from internet enlightens us with reveal the actual historical fact:-

Those people who contributed to the development of that web are people who had experience in particular fields they were entitled to write about.

If you did not believe this statement to be true, you are welcome to look for other information as well. It will be a fruitful experience for you. J
In my opinion, the idea of Internet has indeed made our life easier since we can acquire any information on the net within our fingertips.
ReplyDeleteHowever, this could also sound trouble to us at the same time simply because anyone could be the provider of information on the net. It could be me, you or somebody around you.
What I am trying to say here is, there is no definite answer for the truth of information from the Internet. It is actually up to us to think about it, analyze and filter it before deciding to believe in it.
Ultimately, my stand would still be a firm NO. I would only refer to the Internet for reference. If there is any major news break out, I will check for the other media for confirmation. I think it is best to research through a few source before deciding in what to believe in.
Here is a good example from the recent news, a rumor about a Malaysian billionaire owning a yacht worth USD4.8 billion. When the new was published on the Internet, everyone was discussing and guessing who might the owner be. It was even broadcasted and published on the major TV station, radio station and printed media.
At the end, it was all actually a hoax, as declared by the Italian builder of that particular yacht, saying someone was using their images and digitally altered it for some publicity stunt.

ReplyDeleteI agreed on what it says. Rumours, lies and innuendo spread far, wide and fast on the Internet. Normally, nowadays people use more on Internet then other medium to convey or transmit their ideas and information. The messages and information can spread to the whole world in just a second through the Internet. That is why when we are searching for information in Google, by just one click, all the information and people's opinion or ideas will immediately pop up onto the screen.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion We cannot differentiate it whether is true or not but usually people will just take in everything they found in the web and it depends on the person who read it whether he believe is true or not. Mostly, we try to filter what we expose to from Internet. However, some of the people will just take in and think that is the truth of the news. Some of them knew that the information they get it is a fake one but they still do nothing towards the information. Some of them even change the fact to the fake. They use Internet to transmit that fake information which we call lies and rumours just to fool the authorities and they are trying to influence the authorities by doing that so the authorities think the way they think.
ReplyDeleteRumors, lies and innuendo spread far, wide and fast on the Internet. In today technology its made even simpler with cyber bullying, camera phones (Unaware of picture taking),the internet, and some social sites. Most of the information obtained from the Internet only users simply click we can to know all the information or solve all the problems on the computer or work done so easy with social media today. However, media stereotypes which is information that most of the rumors, lies and spread far.
ReplyDeleteIts easier now for people to believe Lies, Rumors, gossip than the "Truth". For instants with postings Of Lies, Rumors, or even picture an individual (whether your teen or adult) on the internet the "Gossip" spreads like wild fires, millions of people who will believe them rather than the "truth". Also, Journalists and blogger are always associated with "Gossip" magazines that started the lead way on celebrities reporting people were consume with their every movement . Now all magazine that talk about celebrity is not bad nor the internet or social sites.
In my opinion, actually determined by the individual himself believes totally or analyze the information obtained. I agreed with you on what it says, Should we must know the source of the information obtained is true or not. So what does person do when the lies, rumors, gossip are not true. Walk with a mind and uphold the truth because ( I know easier said than done) even though you feel alone, and feel no one will understand. God listening, to your every thought and word of displeasure, and he's on your side no matter what. Fret not the Lies, rumors, gossip whether on the internet, social sites, friends or rank strangers doesn't define who you are Just believe in yourself as being truly appreciated individual.
ReplyDeleteMy opinion, it like 50-50, sometime we can trust, sometime we cannot trust the internet. Nowadays internet comes closer to everyone in this world. People can get any information or news very fast but not all the information or news reliable. Rumors, lies and innuendo spread far, wide and fast on the Internet. We must ensure that the news we get from a reliable source, because not all matters that are in the internet is true. For example, Wikipedia, I mostly find information for assignments in the Wikipedia, but not all information is correct. But sometimes the information in the internet can be trusted, when the issue was produced by a reliable source. For example, to information or news produced by journalists.
ReplyDeleteThe issue that is getting hot now is a fraud in the internet, many types of fraud we see in the internet. For example, email fraud, email asking us to send personal info like name, address, bank account and many more. Many are now trapped by this fraud because they are using reliable sources, such as a bank logo. Examples of other fraud, get rich quick scheme or a simple job, but a higher salary, many are caught by this fraud, invest the money without thinking and not looking for information on this matter. This is all because of human greed to get rich quick, live, without the hassle.
yes i agree with you faisal as we can see that internet comes many advantages to our daily life, people should take their responsibility but not make lies through the internet. Besides, we should becareful when we want to search for information from the internet.
ReplyDeleteI’m agreeing with Juztyn_1111111018 opinion. We should check other media before trust the information, to make sure the first information we get is reliable. With this, we not only believe the rumor and not easily fooled by rumor or a lie.
ReplyDeleteWe must admit that we filled with enormous supply of information every day. But that does not mean necessarily that we are more knowledgeable!
ReplyDeleteA book ‘Media Literacy by W. James Potter’ further explained Juztyn_1111111018’s statement regarding this issue. James differentiates a terminology of Information and Knowledge.
1)Information = FACTS, DATA and IMPRESSIONS.
2)Knowledge = CONSTRUCTION of INFORMATION into MEANINGFUL STRUCTURES.
In order to build worthy information structures, we must analyst for useful information, scan out faulty facts, and form altogether the element of good information in good pattern.
It is essential to have a good KNOWLEDGE STRUCTRES SKILL to guide us in tremendous confrontation with media messages.
Faisal, you are absolutely correct. I totally agree with you that the things written on the Internet are like 50-50. The first part of the news may be the truth but as you continue reading, you will find that some of the fact had been twisted and turned or exaggerated , thus misleading the readers about the originality of the whole thing.
ReplyDeleteSometimes, this kind of things just happen, and it is very frustrating and confusing at the same time feeling so helpless for the people misusing the world wide web for their own negative intention.
Just like what Faisal had said regarding the fraud in the Internet. Nowadays the internet fraud not only just ask people for personal info, they are now using it for money laundering purpose by using that particular person or several person bank account to launder their money and then withdraw it to somewhere else in a smaller amount of money.
This is a very complex crime where it involve a lot of procedures and parties, sometimes it may go unnoticed by the bank, thus making the money disappear without a trace. When the bank notice it, it will first trace the account owner. Now the the bank account owner will be accused of a crime that they don't even know themselves.
So be extra careful on what information you are providing on the Internet or when you are requested to provide any personal info by some unknown parties.
Amin is correct. I think his point of view is very useful to us in our daily use of Internet. In order to deal with the innuendos and rumors on the Internet, it is essential for us to be equipped with good KNOWLEDGE STRUCTURES SKILL to be able to differentiate the truth and the lies.
ReplyDeleteWith this knowledge, at least we won't be easily deceived or conned by the fraud or news on the Internet, victims of the "rumors, lies and innuendo spread far, wide and fast on the Internet" will be reduced too.
In my opinion, "Internet as TRUTH with our thinking much about it" is false for me. It is because internet is free will people that can put false news, rumors, stories, gossip and other things on the internet. We never know is it true or not. Some of them are true, but some of them are made of stories and why? because people like very interesting stories rather real stories on the internet. Sometimes, I believe this people that make false stories is because they don't have a life or maybe it's their jobs to do this kind of work on the internet. We can call this kind of people an "Internet Trolls". But, we need to beware giving a news to other people on the internet it is maybe a crime to this. So, never ever put false stories and if you don't want to put a fake one but in a good way
ReplyDeleteFalse information do happened since the earliest of our forefathers.
ReplyDeleteOne good example is legendary stories that were spread mouth-to-mouth.
This proves that internet is not the sole reason for such misconception to arise...
I have to agree with Faisal, it is 50-50 true on the internet. But we will never know is it true or not that the internet have giving to us. Internet give a good information, news and other so we can see and learn from it. But, however it can be fake to us if we can see for example like " The Onion News" it is funny news. Wikipedia can be a good news and artical, but some of them are not true.
ReplyDeleteYes I agree with Amin to. we need good knowledge, with this knowledge we can decide the information is true or not, without trusting the rumors or any information only, and Internet fraud and improper rumors can be reduced, and if things are really reduced, perhaps one day all the information and news in the internet can be trusted 100%
ReplyDeletehahaha..faisal and his 50-50 opinion. ;p
ReplyDelete"Do you often take what is on the Internet as TRUTH with our thinking much about it?"
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, no.
Why?
Because as far as I know any information given whether its on the internet or broadcast in television or even published in the newspaper, there will always be misinformation, baseless rumors and theories, edited information, suggestive information, and even information that is intentionally misleading.
Example of misleading information : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tiHIRUQkwyM
Nowadays, people have the ability to obtain information at their fingertips but..the big BUT is that people nowadays also have the ability to create wrong information as well as frauds..right at their finger tips.
We have heard many cases of how devastating misinformation over the internet can be..There are now many mediums in the internet (such as blogger) where people could post up wrong information or biased opinions and many more. The fact that Wikipedia being an open bookcase where random people who thinks they know best could just write down whatever they think is true to them did not help at all.
Example of misinformation in Wikipedia on Homeopathy : http://blog.hmedicine.com/homeopathy-and-homeopathic-medicine-blog/bid/4844/Homeopathy-Misinformation-on-Wikipedia
Now, cases like receiving emails by a millionaire businessman from Nigeria asking for help to create a bank account for him which included deposit banking and will reward the helper richly is a normal thing.
Example of a fraud case : http://www.malaysianbar.org.my/news_features/cyber_crooks_falling_prey_to_online_fraud.html
In the end, we must never trust anything, anyone or any information on the internet.
To avoid misinformation on the internet would require massive researches, comparing information from different places and medias, and always remain doubtful with every information given.
Always remember. People lie.
Cheers.
"But this does not mean that we should reject source from internet totally. At times internet played a role as relevant information that we would not had retrieved it somewhere else." by Amin
ReplyDeleteI agree with this. Although the internet is infested with misinformation, fraud, intentional lies as well as biases information, there are actual places where you can find factual and unbiased information. But only if you look hard enough.
"My opinion, it like 50-50" by Faisal
ReplyDeleteHahahah, you and your 50-50. :)
"In my opinion We cannot differentiate it whether is true or not but usually people will just take in everything they found in the web and it depends on the person who read it whether he believe is true or not." by Zairy.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Zairy.
People will usually believe what they wanted to believe. It's almost sad that people rarely research deeper into the rumors or information that was given.
In the end it's really up to the reader whether they wanted to be fooled or not.
