Are bloggers journalists? First let see who bloggers is and who journalists is. According to “Wikipedia” bloggers is a person who writes a blog, or weblog and journalists is a person that collects and disseminates information about current events, people, trends, and issues. His or her work is acknowledged as journalism. Reporters are one type of journalist. They create reports as a profession for broadcast or publication in mass media such as newspapers, television, radio, magazines, documentary film, or the Internet.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, only some of the blogger are journalist, because most of the blogger write a blog as online dairy, about their feeling, their days, works and other personal thing. Not everything they write is true, but some of it is true. For the journalists their collects and disseminates information. The information must be 100% true and they cannot subtract or added anything in the information. So, some of the blogger are journalists. For me it 50-50.
Are bloggers journalists and what is your take on this? in my opinion bloggers journalist is Well for starters, it’s cool to be a journalist. That’s not the result of the study, that’s just my guess.Regardless of your position on the topic, it’s clear that bloggers are gaining more and more influence. Audience size is growing for many, and collectively bloggers have a reach equal to or greater than traditional media across many categories. Bloggers and traditional outlets are both equipped with the ability to rapidly spread information across the Web at the same pace.
ReplyDeleteyes i agree with you faisal.Even if half of bloggers think they are journalists, that doesn’t make it so. If I think I’m particularly good looking, it doesn’t make it so. I’ll answer the question for you – no, most bloggers are not journalists. Some journalists are bloggers and vice-versa. It comes down to the quality, accuracy and authenticity of the content from my perspective.
ReplyDeleteYes, I do agree with both of you regarding this matter. Authentication is a vital issue not only regarding journalism, but it occurs in many aspects of life. Lecturers for example have to deal with quality of assignments as plagiarism had been a major question. Information was easily obtained through the internet but how genuine was that information will always be a question. So does this applied to Blogging authentication. Where’s the source of that particular information? How bloggers do received such news?
ReplyDeleteIt was not an easy task for someone to be a journalist on printed media, television, radio, and others as such. They first need to undergo certain levels of education in to achieve becoming an expertise in journalism. A journalist’s information were also revised and filtered before it was published or broadcasted to the people.
Hence, indigenous journalists are journalist by right regarding what media they involved in but bloggers isn’t necessary. One has to be a qualified expertise in the area (not necessarily journalism) to be analyzing about it!

ReplyDeleteExamples of an expertise as I have mentioned are:-
ReplyDelete1)our previous Prime Minister - Tun Dr.Mahathir's blog
http://mahathir-mohamad.blogspot.com/
2)Yusof Estes, a head of priest who studied and converted to Islam. He gave perching through series of video blog
http://islamic-helper.blogspot.com/
yes i agree with you amin..As a blogger who considers that he’s moved into the realms of journalism, I’d say that some bloggers are becoming journalists.
ReplyDeleteBlogging and journalists aren’t exactly the same. Journalists more disseminate information through most of his facts and information presented by journalists to be accurate . That is that journalists is "telling the whole truth." But now that has a whole new meaning. It is about getting the facts straight and having the obligation to the citizens to get the story out there. It's about putting your emotions and religious views away from the story and writing the facts. Whereas
ReplyDeletebloggers actually give not the facts information because the bloggers is free writing and express what them feel or see like experience . Bloggers not to pay what them writing and what the information delivered because not the facts.
In my opinion journalists and blogger is different because what the purpose want to inform about entertainment, people ,technology and etc is view different information. Maybe we can believe the information from journalists because what them inform is facts. However, the information from blogger maybe can accept because something the information is logic because what them writing is from them experience and them faced. If you work in media relations, journalists and bloggers are your information. I think a lot of media relations pros overlook this basic fact when working with the media.
ReplyDelete"Are bloggers journalists?
ReplyDeleteFirst let see who bloggers is and who journalists is.
According to “Wikipedia” bloggers is a person who writes a blog, or weblog and journalists is a person that collects and disseminates information about current events, people, trends, and issues. His or her work is acknowledged as journalism.
Reporters are one type of journalist. They create reports as a profession for broadcast or publication in mass media such as newspapers, television, radio, magazines, documentary film, or the Internet."
Yes, I completely agree with Faisal, Zairy and Amin.
To put it simply, Journalists are all about the facts. And Amin is right, there are a series of checking the fact, correcting errors and maybe an actual interview and lots of process when it comes to Journalism. One wrong move, one slip of the fact and they might get sued.
Bloggers have it easier. Most of them are free-thinkers and opinionated people trying to put up and show the world about their opinion and how they feel about something.
Will they do a run check on facts or maybe authentication that whatever they posted up online is truly written by them?
Mostly, no. Sadly, the internet is like a double edge sword that provides people to copy and paste information and most of the time those copied information were not credited.
Do they even have any education and expertise about journalism?
Some do. But lets face it, most bloggers don't.
There are some very factual and authentic blogger that might be considered as a type of journalism. But it's rare.
So, are Bloggers Journalists?
In my opinion. Some.
It depends on the content, the facts and the authenticity.
Cheers.
I agree with Al-Amin_1111112970, is not easy to be a journalist, it requires high education and to become a blogger does not need education like journalist.
ReplyDeleteIn my personal opinion, I certainly think that bloggers are not in the same league with the journalists. There are a few criteria to adhere to in order to be qualified as a journalist.
ReplyDeleteWhat separate the journalists from the bloggers are the level of education. In order to be a qualified journalist, one will have to be well-educated on professional writing and equipped with good command of language. What they write will reflect on the intellectual behavior and educational background of a person. They also will be much more careful than the bloggers on what are supposed to write and what not.
Secondly, a journalist must be able to analyze and interpret the facts, differentiate between the true and false, and determine the credibility of the news source. They are professionally trained in this field in order to deliver the news to the public like hot cakes.
Beside that, a journalist also has to be professional in their work ethic. Unlike bloggers who love to write out what's in their mind, journalists will have to consider various external factors before deciding to publish their articles. Even before publishing the news, their articles will be go through by the several gatekeepers internally, scrutinizing for ineligibility, correcting some facts and getting agreement from other party as well, then only the news will be go on public.
Now, I've found these two Blogs that could be agood example of a Journalist Blogger:
ReplyDelete1) http://www.j-scribe.com/
( By Julie Posetti. This journalist and journalism academic from Australia who focuses on advocacy issues and who blogs at J-Scribe about many other issues.)
2) http://mindymcadams.com/tojou/
(Mindy McAdams teaches university courses about online journalism and shares her knowledge in this blog.)
Here is a type of photojournalism blog :
1) http://www.zoriah.net/
I totally agree with Amin regarding the authentication of blogging. I mean, how true can bloggers write about their articles ? Can theirs articles considered as a source of information that we can rely on for credibility ? What type of information and facts do they based on ? Did they do a thorough research on the news ? Or go through the trouble of interview that particular person for in-depth knowledge ?
ReplyDeleteNo. I don't think so. For most of the bloggers don't actually did what the journalists have. What they write are actually their opinion based on their own understanding, speaking up what is in their mind, some may even refer to only one source of information.
And yes I agree with Amin. To be a Journalist would require some education about journalism.
ReplyDeleteIt doesn't take a genius to create a blog.
A blog from a 12 year old passionately expressing his disagreement about the horrible graphics from an online game and complaining how the GM (Game Master) did not respond to his pleas is definitely not a type of journalism.
I agree with IBtcam. That journalists output is a facts and blogger output from them experience. But sometime the experience can become a facts.
ReplyDeleteHere is an example of a local blogger who is carefree in his expression of thought, simply accusing a minister on an alleged offense without any strong evidence or proof to support his accusation. In the end, he had to bear the consequence.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.ctv.ca/CTVNews/SciTech/20110719/malaysia-minister-wins-libel-suit-against-blogger-110719/
This is why a blogger will never achieve the same status as the journalist because of their distinct work ethic in writing. Simply put it like this(No offence intended) : One write without a brain, the latter write with a brain.
Do bear in mind, every action comes with a chain reaction.
In my opinion, it is depends on the blogger. Cause for me some of the blogger are not a journalists. Blogger is for a place to update the story of someone and also as in daily life news. But, blogging can be use as in good and evil for the internet. Journalists is giving a real news, while blogging can be fake or true. I would had to say Bloggers is not a journalist because of the way they wrote.
ReplyDeleteI agree with with IB. It is because Blogger and Journalist is not the same. Journalist gives a good story and truth about the world news, while Blogger some of them are not. It is also depends on the blogger perception, what he trying to write on his blog. Some of them write a very good blog which give a good review to the people who see his or her blog.

ReplyDeleteAlthough as everyone agrees that blogging should not be equally compared with journalism, in some cases we should also rely on blog and other media.
ReplyDeleteFor instance, national media were recognized to be assaulting the opposition party and were regarded by many as being pro-government. This is where we should also refer to opposition blog and other media such as http://www.malaysiakini.com and Harakah newspaper. They are unfortunately qualified journalist who do not side the government.
As lectured by Mr. Halim in class, during Tun Dr.Mahathir regime, he controlled 90% of the media. Therefore, any individuals who dare to confront him will be penalized for violating Internal Security Act (ISA). However, his successor seems to change that policy and concession were given to the opposition media. Eventually, it ends up with a change of people’s mind as results of the general election were rather shocking.
It is proven that media control has and could affect people’s mind. Media primes reported that the ‘BERSIH’ riot on 7th July this year as the act of terror. However, media from Singapore and Al-Jazeera showed that police officers and Federal Reserve Units (FRU) were those who committed violence by spraying water and tear gases.
In this case scenario, individuals should be warned not to be fanatic but rather consider studying both sides regarding an issue conspired.
