The Media Stereotypes

After watch the sample video of stereotype s of arab people. I found that it is a typical thing in Hollywood Media. Why? Well for my opinion, American had always make fun of the immigrant people such as african, arab, asian, jews, indian , mexican and so on. You see the history of stereotype is begin in World War II when the nazi leader, Hitler trying to propaganda against the jews. For that, the media start to produce a propaganda media by making establishment poster and cartoon. Not only that, the American also make propaganda media about the nazi and also the japanese when the japanese army take over all the asian country. The most famous media that can shown the stereotypes is the television especially the cartoon like Warner Bros, Disney, and other company cartoon. I think this kind of media is produce is because to shown how bad is this people. You can find this propaganda and stereotype cartoon on Youtube "Banned Cartoon"

After the World War II, people begin to make fun on the African American People. This is because at that time the African American people were a slaved to the American people also known as "white people" After slavery have ended, people still make fun on the African American people because there are different in skin, behavior and culture. By shown how funny the African American People, the media especially Hollywood start produce stereotype and racist cartoon toward them. In cartoon world African American can been seen by the black face and large lips. And their comment behavior is slow and lazy if you can see in the old time cartoon. Their favourite thing in the world is eating chicken, watermelon and playing gamble (using a two pair of dice). Not only that, even the asian also make fun and produce a stereotype of them like an asian that is bad in driving. Arab is the most media favourite stereotypes in Hollywood. As you can see in American film movies, there more arab stereotypes in every Hollywood movies like Meet The Zohan, Aladdin and many more. As you can see, American media people love to make fun of the arab people. Some say, it is because their have hatred toward the arab or their think that arab people is funny and stupid. But, we will never known why? Not only movies and cartoon, music can produce a very strong stereotypes toward people like hip hop song. Many rapper in 90's was shoot because of the lyric song their produce. Advertisement and commercial can be see in the late 90's such as food commercial, beauty product and many more.

For me, there are two things why the Hollywood produce stereotypes in media. The first reason is because of different skin, culture and race. The American see the immigrant in different culture, behavior and skin is pretty well interest and funny. It is also how the immigrant do like for example, an asian person is speaking english with a weird sound, jews is really cheap and american "redneck" love to drink beer. It's not because American invented stereotype, it is because how the immigrant behave. And it is really funny toward the Hollywood and their use that method to make a good movie, cartoon and others. The second, is the hatred between different people. For example, American movies shown many Arabs as a villian. This is because american have been the enemy to the middle east since ages. After 9/11 media began to produce bad movies about arabs. It will effect to the american children toward arab. Not only that the middle east also produce bad things about American and it's produce the American Stereotype.

For my opinion, it is a common thing in the American media toward the stereotypes. Because if we look back again, it is true how their act and behave. No matter what, we can't run from the truth. However, not all true about the stereotypes behave. Some of them, don't have that way especially the new era of people. People now day have a good thinking then the past. So we can all just enjoy and trying to be more understand about the stereotype to the media. But, No To Racist People!!!!!

And here is the song for you all :) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wCgx8zM3woQ

  1. Stereotypes play an important role in today's society and particularly in Propaganda. Stereotypes can be basic or complex generalizations which people apply to individuals or groups based on their appearance, behaviour and beliefs. Stereotypes have existed since the beginning of time in our everyday life through religion, politics and the media. I am agree with you.

  2. In my opinion One may believe it is possible to rid oneself of such habits. However if one looked at the regular promotions of propaganda, it would make this objective impossible. Examples that can be seen is the video that shows how the west all the good and the Arabs who are showing a negative, but may actually not that bad. most of the information conveyed by the media were not very accurate, especially the electronic media may be better for us review the information presented right or less right.Stereotypes however aren't always negative. On the contrary, the propaganda's use of stereotypes is not necessarily always a negative phenomenon. Propaganda's use of stereotypes can sometimes give one the motivation to learn.

  3. i am agree with you..stereotypes are generalizations, or assumptions, that people make about the characteristics of all members of a group, based on an image about what people in that group are like. For example, one study of stereotypes revealed that Americans are generally considered to be friendly, generous, and tolerant, but also arrogant, impatient, and domineering.Clearly, not all Americans are friendly and generous; and not all Asians are shrewd. If you assume you know what a person is like, and don't look at each person as an individual, you are likely to make errors in your estimates of a person's character.

  4. in my opinion..about media stereotypes is the media is full of economic, gender and ethnic stereotypes, from the roles of good guys and bad guys in video games to the animated films our youngest children enjoy. White male heroes far outnumber both women and minorities in media portrayals. And, although women have come a long way in how popular culture reflects their status, statistics show women are still most often relegated to roles of love interest, or selfless.

I do not agree with you because women in Hollywood by statistics are regarded as ‘Sex Symbols’.
For example, the ‘Megan Fox repairing car scene’ in Transformers (Since everyone are talking about Transformers)
They wore mini pants, skirts, bikinis and everything that they described as clothing but we could still see their ‘BODY PARTS’.

This is very contradicting to Islamic way of life as describe in the Holy Quran.

“And tell the believing women to reduce [some] of their vision and guard their private parts and not expose their adornment except that which [necessarily] appears thereof and to wrap [a portion of] their headcovers over their chests and not expose their adornment except to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands' fathers, their sons, their husbands' sons, their brothers, their brothers' sons, their sisters' sons, their women, that which their right hands possess, or those male attendants having no physical desire, or children who are not yet aware of the private aspects of women. And let them not stamp their feet to make known what they conceal of their adornment. And turn to Allah in repentance, all of you, O believers, that you might succeed.”

I do not agree with you because your answer is based upon assumptions. If we read back through history about America and British interference in Israel nation establishment, you will understand why. (It’s a very long story to be explained here)

And those efforts are continued by the present American President!

And what countries seem to be located around and are a threat to the proposed Holyland of Israel??

    THE ARABS!

  8. Media Stereotyping – Introduction
Media stereotypes are inevitable, especially in the advertising, entertainment and news industries, which need as wide an audience as possible to quickly understand information. Stereotypes act like codes that give audiences a quick, common understanding of a person or group of people—usually relating to their class, ethnicity or race, gender, sexual orientation, social role or occupation.

    -ref : http://www.media-awareness.ca/english/issues/stereotyping/index.cfm -

The video was show a group of people have been set the characteristics of a terrorist, where we can see in the documentary, and the villain character in Hollywood, often related to Arabs.

My opinion. The other Media Stereotyping is relating to the gender it is “Women Are Bad drivers” we can see real life and in movie the most accident caused are by women, because women to emotional, fear, doubt and soon.

  9. I’m total agree with Al-Amin_1111112970 said to Venom about Surahtul An-Nūr 24:31. But the world right now we can see most of the films in the world, all involved in sins, expose their genitalia. This all because of the media from the Jews, who want Islam to fall.

  10. hahaha.. I was laughing-out-loud watching the video posted by faisal_flyart. . How far this proclaimed stereotype to be true? I, myself never heard of this so I STRONGLY disagree with this one because anyone can post a video on YouTube web and claim it to be a stereotype!
Besides, women’s driving was never really a main concerned to our government. Women prefer Auto-cars as they can navigate their car with more efficiency. The Government main worries are more to:-
i)‘Mat Rempit’ symptom and illegal races.
ii)Driving during Special Occasions for example: Hari Raya, Deepavali and Christmas.

  12. As referring to Fazouk's post, I am totally agree with him that Hollywood is using their influence in media producing stereotyping movie.

As you know, The American have been so used to be referred as the superpower country. So in order to showcase their superiority, they just feel like want to make fun of the other race's culture and behavior. At the end of the show, the American will always have the upper hand.

For example, "The Karate Kid". The main character from the US have migrated to China due to some reason. Just as he thought he will have a good start in his life, he have encountered some bullies in his school, and everything was just turning out not as he had thought.

Until he met a mentor, and was taught of some kung fu. At the end, he had won over his dream girl and defeat his Chinese nemesis in the competition.

Apparently, in this movie, it was trying to portray the asian as the loser, and the american was always on the winning end.

  13. According to Faisal's “Women Are Bad drivers”, I may be agree with him on this. Yes, women are mostly emotional and skeptical whenever they are driving on the road.

I, myself had encountered a lot of those "bad drivers". There is one time that a woman was driving in front of me, not sure of where she was heading, she just slow down all of sudden with the signal light turning to the left, she turn her car to the right. What happen next was the car on the opposite lane banked on her car, and the rest was history.

I was fortunate for not driving close behind her, if not the consequences could have been worse.

I agree with this. The differences culturally, physically and religiously of the Eastern people (be it middle east, or south east) is one of the causes that creates stereotypes.
This might sound naive. In my opinion, it is because of the differences that is the cause of them to fear the people of the East. Why? When people do not understand something because it is just too different in many ways, it causes them to fear it. As we know, fear creates hatred. They create a way of thinking to cope with that differences.
This is nothing more than a case of 'The Fox and The Grapes' (It's a story about a fox who saw a bunch of grapes high above. He tries to get it but no matter how he tried he can never get it. In the end, He gave up and say that he doesn't want it and was sure the grapes were sour anyway'.) This story can be applied to basically how most people would do in such situations.
You can just imagine the Americans who considered themselves superior above all cultures and ethics as well and religion would react when they discovered that there are other people with different color of skin and cultures and religion. How would they react to such an alien culture? They scoff at the differences!

"Indians have big noses, eats nothing but curry and will only work in 7Eleven!"(Apparently the Indian's respect for cows and not eating beef is considered funny and such comedy has been reused many times in American sitcoms)

"Chinese are bad at driving (I think whoever have decided this stereotype had a pure shock in Chine due to the traffic in China compare to the Western traffic), bad at English, greedy, extremely smart and sneaky"

"The Arabs does nothing but bombing themselves, they are stupid, they are extremist! They kill themselves for their god! They have a harem of wives and have many more waiting for them in heaven. They are terrorist"

The African Americans, Canadians, Germans, Japanese, South East Asians and many others that are considered different from the norm in certain region in different places, have their own stereotypes due to lack of similarities.

Do I need to add more? Notice that most of the Stereotypes that has been used many times in movies and dramas are based on the differences of their culture. Things that they considered 'not normal'.

  15. I agree with Amin on the topic of women being portray as "Sex Symbols" in the Hollywood culture.

Although, the world always say that men and women should be treated on equal term, women should be given the same opportunity as the men do. As you can see, the Germany has elected their first woman chancellor to lead their country, and a lot of the women nowadays are holding a place in the top management of the world's top corporation, like the Pepsi Co. is headed by Indra Nooyi as CEO, CEO of Kuwait Finance House Malaysia, Jamelah Jamaluddin.

Unfortunately, this is not what it seems to be in the Hollywood culture. They just like to treat the women as "Sex Symbols" to attract the alpha-male to the cinema by making the women clad in skimpy outfit or doing some seductive pose.

To me, as a conservative asian, doing this to the women was like making a disparaging remark on them, disrespecting them as an intellectual human being, abusing the right of the women by treating them like a puppet manipulated by the dominant alpha-male.

I Agree with Faisal's “Women Are Bad drivers” and I STRONGLY(hahaha) disagree with Amin.
Just because you have never heard of such stereotypes does not mean you can cast it aside as nothing more than a rumor.
Apparently, this stereotype is pretty well known throughout the world. Many times it have been portrayed in movies and sitcoms be it in Asia or America. Women checking out the rear-view mirror to check on their lipstick and make up and not seeing the road (and run over whatever it was) is a very common scene used for comedies.

  18. I’m total agree with Juztyn_1111111018, most almost all Hollywood films, would put another race or country as the enemy in the film, and the American people and the nation is good people.

    Example:
The Fast and The Furious Tokyo Drift – a man America can defeat all Japanese drivers.

The Forbidden Kingdom – show that The Jade Warlord as bad guy and An American teenager as the chosen one.

How often did you see women using lipstick while driving a car in Malaysia? Did they get caught of misconduct or caused an accident because of that?? I am talking about real BAD DRIVING here..not some movies and sitcoms..

Even if it is true women have more tendency to be scared and careless in driving.
How do you judge man being a hasty driver? They cut speed trap and hit red light signal. Should that fall under BAD DRIVING category too?
Genders are not the issue in this case scenario. :)

If you are still insisting women are the WORST (that's new category) SPECIES to ever drive a car, then all i can say is "well, thankfully that isn't me..hehehe.."
